15 Must-Do Activities in Cusco, Peru

Cusco is one of my absolute favorite cities, I’ve visited multiple times! Everywhere you turn, there’s history, incredible scenery, and plazas full of energy and culture. If you’re planning your first trip, here are 15 things you definitely don’t want to miss, and a few tips to make the most of your visit!

Here are a few more posts to help you plan an unforgettable trip:

1) Plaza de Armas

Start at the city’s main square. Plaza de Armas is the heart of Cusco, lined with historic buildings, restaurants, and shops. I’ve had the privilege of seeing plenty of local traditions in the square, from parades to bamboo fire shows! It’s free, and perfect for people-watching or just a place to sit and relax.

2) Guided Walking Tour

A walking tour is a great way to get your bearings and learn the mix of Incan and Spanish history. Many tours are affordable (like this one that’s only $15 – don’t forget to tip your guide) and they usually last 2–3 hours, a perfect activity for your first day while you adjust to the altitude.

3) Cusco Cathedral

Right on Plaza de Armas, the cathedral is so beautiful. Inside, you’ll find ornate altars, colonial art, and a twist on The Last Supper painting—Peruvian-style with guinea pig on the table! Entry is about 40 soles (~$10 USD, buy tickets at the entrance).

4) Sacsayhuamán

A short walk or taxi from the center of Cusco, these Incan ruins are jaw-dropping. The massive stone walls fit together perfectly without mortar. Pro tip: if you do a Cusco city tour like this one, a trip to Sacsayhuamán is included!

5) Centro Artesanal Cusco

This artisan market has colorful clothing, jewelry, pottery, and artwork. Even if you’re not shopping, it’s fun to walk around and ‘window shop.’ Bring cash and note that many vendors are open to bargaining (but if you can, paying full price is a great way to support local artisans. Prices in Cusco are already very affordable!)

6) San Blas District

Walk the cobblestone streets of this artsy neighborhood. Galleries, workshops, and boutiques are everywhere. I found a hand-painted art piece here that is one of my favorite souvenirs from the trip. Walking is free but bring some extra cash if you want to shop.

7) ATV & Sacred Valley Tour

If you’re up for an adventure, take an ATV tour through the Andes (~$35 USD). You’ll stop at archaeological sites and get incredible views. Book ahead, and don’t forget cash for tips. This was one of my favorite experiences of the whole trip!

8) Moray

Moray is a series of circular terraces the Incas used to experiment with crops. You can visit this site on its own, but it’s also included as a stop on this ATV tour!

9) Salt Mines of Maras

These salt pools tucked into the mountains were one of my favorite stops of the trip! Entry is about 10 soles (~$2.50 USD). Pro tip: a stop here is also included in the ATV Tour! (can you see the ATVs were one of my favorite experiences?!) PS if you get a chance to try chocolate with salt from the mines don’t miss it!

10) Machu Picchu

No trip is complete without this! Day trips are possible, but I recommend staying overnight in Aguas Calientes to enter early. Tickets start at $45 USD—book weeks in advance.

11) Horseback Riding Tour

One of my favorite experiences. We rode to a Temple of Fertility and a healing cave, with a local guide sharing coca leaf traditions. Tours are around $40–$50 USD per person.

12) Rainbow Mountain

The early wake-up is worth it for the colorful mountains! The hike is tough due to altitude (17,000+ ft), but the views are unforgettable. Tours start around $30 USD.

13) Uchu Steakhouse

For a memorable meal, Uchu is a must! The Peruvian-style steak and presentation are incredible. We loved it so much, we went twice during our trip! Expect $25–$40 USD per person.

14) Cicciolina Café

Cute spot to get some work done, read, or enjoy some delicious food. Perfect for a relaxed evening or an easy midday lunch. Budget ~$15–$25 USD.

15) Buy Alpaca Goods

Cusco is a great place to find alpaca wool scarves, sweaters, and blankets. Many of them show Incan influence, and even the high-quality items are so much cheaper than in the U.S.!
