One Day in Franklin Tennessee: Perfect Itinerary

Only have one day to explore Franklin? No problem. You can still experience the best of this historic  Hallmark town (yes, Hallmark has actually filmed movies here!).

Here’s a simple, step-by-step itinerary that balances food, history, shopping, and more.

9:00 AM – Breakfast at Merridee’s Breadbasket or Biscuit Love

Start your morning at Merridee’s, a Franklin favorite. This bakery and cafe is cozy and almost feels like a cabin. If you visit, don’t miss the hashbrown casserole!

Or, try Biscuit Love, a Nashville-born favorite now in Franklin. Housed in a historic home, it’s delicious and a great spot for photos.

10:00 AM – Historic Tour (Choose One)

Franklin played a major role in the Civil War, and visiting one of the historic sites is a good way to understand the town’s past:

  • The Carter House (downtown) – Tour the home and grounds where some of the Battle of Franklin took place. The site also highlights the lives of enslaved people who lived and worked on these properties, offering important context about the town’s full history. $22 Tour, Book Here
  • Carnton Plantation (5 minutes away) – A larger site with guided tours of the house, gardens, and historic cemetery. Tours include discussion of the people that lived and labored here, giving a more full picture of Franklin during this era. $29 Tour, Book Here

Acknowledging the role of slavery and the experiences of those who were enslaved helps us understand the deeper history of Franklin beyond the battlefield. Learning about this history is an important part of visiting the South responsibly.

12:00 PM – Lunch at Mercantile Deli

Head back downtown for a casual lunch at Mercantile Deli. Their soups, sandwiches, and salads make it a perfect refuel (they also have gluten free bread).

For dessert or a mid day sweet treat I recommend Whitney’s Cookies or Kilwins! Whitney’s has a great chocolate chip cookie that’s gluten-free for those that need it and is right next to the Deli.

1:30 PM – Shopping on Main Street

Spend the afternoon exploring downtown Franklin’s shops and boutiques. Here are a few favorites I would recommend:

  • White’s Mercantile
  • The Green Room
  • Heart and Hands
  • Savory Spice Shop
  • Tin Cottage
  • Landmark Booksellers – A 20+ year old independent bookstore housed in a historic building.
  • Winchester Antique Mall
  • Franklin Antique Mall

3:30 PM – Drive Through Franklin’s Historic Neighborhoods

Take a slow drive or walk through the neighborhoods just off Main Street. You’ll see beautiful historic homes (they’re especially beautiful in spring and fall).

4:30 PM – Coffee Break at The Coffee House at Second and Bridge

Relax with a coffee or pastry at this local favorite inside a historic home. There’s indoor and outdoor seating, and be sure to check their specials board for seasonal drinks and snacks!

6:00 PM – Dinner & Live Music

Gray’s on Main is a great choice for dinner, set inside a restored building with great food and live music.

If Gray’s is booked or you want something different, try:

  • McCreary’s Irish Pub – Casual with a neighborhood feel
  • 55 South – Southern dishes with a seafood twist
  • Puckett’s – Known for Southern classics and frequent live music

8:00 PM – Franklin Ghost Tour

Wrap up your day with a ghost tour through downtown Franklin. It’s a mix of history, storytelling, and a little spooky fun. I really enjoyed this $25 tour!

Optional Add-Ons or Swaps

  • Bicentennial Park: A short walk near downtown along the Harpeth River.
  • The Factory at Franklin: Converted factory space with coffee, food, and boutique shops.
  • Arrington Vineyards (20 minutes away): If you’d rather end your day with wine and a sunset than a ghost tour.
  • Painted Tree: 10 minute drive from downtown- collection of vendor booths with everything from clothing and jewelry to candles and home decor
